What is Resilience and why do we need it?

As we age, we inevitably face certain challenges. We are more likely to have had bereavements, if we have children they  may leave home, we may retire or partially retire from work, and there's more chance of having been affected by illness. Bette Davies had a point when she said "old age ain't no place for cissies"! On the other hand, we have a lot of advantages - we've had time to get to know ourselves, we've had more experience and learnt a trick or two.

Resilience is a way of thinking about our strengths - it's about bouncing back when life throws us a lemon. But it can be more than that. It can be a way of using our experiences to learn, develop and grow, to become more fully who we can be. Click on the pictures below to read some ideas about ways to be more resilient, to keep ourselves well and confident through difficult times.
